Technical plastics replacing metal in machines and automation equipment
In the machine and automation industry, technical plastics are increasingly replacing metal. The benefits are numerous: lower weight, better sliding properties, chemical resistance, lower maintenance costs, and quieter operation. PlastShop delivers semi-finished products to machine builders, contract manufacturers, and maintenance workshops throughout the Nordic region. Our materials are easily processed with conventional CNC machines and lathes.
Requirements and challenges
- The material must withstand constant mechanical stress without deforming
- Low friction and good wear resistance for moving parts
- Dimensional stability at varying temperatures and humidity
- Easy processing with CNC, lathe, and milling
- Chemical resistance to oils, fats, and lubricants
Recommended materials
First choice for precision parts. Low friction, high stiffness, excellent processability
Gears, bearings, and sliding surfaces. High wear resistance and good chemical resistance
Exceptional wear resistance for conveyors, guides, and wear strips
High-performance parts that withstand high temperatures and aggressive chemicals
Precision parts with excellent dimensional stability and surface finish
Machine guards and sight glasses. Transparent and extremely impact-resistant
Common applications
Gears and gearboxes
POM and PA6 provide quiet operation, low friction, and long service life without lubrication.
Bearings and bushings
POM, PA6, and PEEK replace metal bearings with lower weight and maintenance.
Conveyors and guides
PE-1000 and PA6 for sliding surfaces, guides, and wear strips on conveyor belts.
CNC-machined parts
POM, PEEK, and PET provide excellent surface finish and tight tolerances in CNC machining.
Why choose plastic?
Technical plastics offer a unique combination of properties that metal cannot match. Plastics are lighter, have naturally low friction (often without the need for lubrication), dampen vibrations and noise, and do not corrode. In many applications, plastics provide longer service life and lower total cost than metal. Additionally, plastics are easier and less expensive to process, resulting in shorter lead times and lower production costs.
