Plastic Materials That Withstand Tough Conditions in Water Purification

Plastic in Water Purification: Which Materials Can Handle the Job?

Water purification is a complex process where components are constantly exposed to aggressive chemicals. Which plastic materials can you really rely on in that environment?

Chemical resistance is key. Chlorine, acids, and bases can quickly break down materials not made for the task. That's why we must choose carefully.

Materials That Can Take a Beating

We offer several plastics well-suited for use in water purification plants. Some examples are PP, PVDF, HDPE (also called PEHD or PE-300), and PTFE. They all have good chemical resistance and can be used in many different contexts.

PP and HDPE are often used to make tanks and pipes. PVDF and PTFE are better suited for filter housings and other components that require extremely high resistance.

PTFE stands out with its exceptional chemical inertness. The material can handle environments where other plastics would quickly corrode or be damaged. PTFE has a Shore hardness of 65° Shore D.

Applications in Water Purification

A water purification system has many components: tanks, pipelines, filter housings, support structures, and more. All of these must withstand the chemicals used in the process and the physical stresses they are exposed to.

We can help you choose the right material for each application. HDPE is a good choice for tanks and pipes, thanks to its high resistance to both chemicals and mechanical stress. PVDF is an excellent option for filter housings because it can withstand harsh chemical environments.

What happens if you take a chance and choose the wrong material? The components can corrode, leak, or even break down. This, in turn, can negatively affect water quality.

Important Things to Consider

When choosing plastic for water purification equipment, you must also consider the operating conditions. The temperature and pressure in the system matter, as does the concentration of chemicals.

Regular maintenance is also important. If the components aren't properly cared for, they can weaken and break down prematurely.

Have you considered the specific requirements your application places on the materials?
